| | rejuvenated | ] | My first tests of the semester were last week, microbiology and pathology. And after the harrowing studying done by the great majority of my friends, we decided to go to Carriacou. Carriacou is part of the country of Grenada along with Petite Martinique, and the island of Grenada itself. Of course because of our ridiculous studying, we didnt really make any, well, plans. Two tents were bought, Saturday morning was set as our date of departure and that was about it. Complications soon arose as Friday night was a rather raging post finals party, and for some, Saturday became hangover central. But we persevered and all of us made it on the early ferry!

Water Temp: 30 degrees C Max depth: 15 meters Visibility: Amazing Dive Partners: Dave (guide), Chris Seward, Heidi Hon, Tanya DiFrancesco, Shintaro Chiba.
My first dive in many years, and most certainly one of the best Ive been on. The island we dove off of has a sharp drop off on the ocean side. Along that drop off is a descending wall of coral as well as numerous coral covered boulders that have fallen in over the years due to erosion of the volcanic island. I should note here that the small, rocky island that we were diving off of has been the only place Ive seen pelicans since coming to Grenada. They look very will fed diving into the ocean and scooping up fish from the surface. ( Read more... ) |

| Roommate problem? |
[Aug. 1st, 2009|04:58 am] |
So, I live in a pink barbie-style mansion with 8 other people. Its split into 3 apartments. My apartment is on the ground floor and I have two roommates, Chris and Sen. We all get along real well, and things operate at a very laid back pace. I mean, I'm the most anal one here. There is one issue though that came up from pretty much the moment we moved in together. Sen has found himself a girl.
Now normally I would be all for this, however, he spends maybe 30 min per WEEK at home. This shouldn't be a bad thing, right? We get more time to ourselves and no dishes. But he also isn't there to pay the maids, pitch in for food (we do family dinner 1ce per week) or socialize. The reason he wanted into our group (the rest of us lived together in Newcastle) is that he isn't doing so well in school and wanted all the gunners to give him a hand. We all agreed because we really like him! And also because we needed a 9th to balance costs!
Now it feels like we've been abandoned. Chris and I were looking into getting a car, but its become cost prohibitive without a third person. Sen is normally not very reliable, but now its more likely than not he'll cancel without notice. Is this a case of let him just do his thing? Or do we find another roommate? The problem I see with asking him if he plans on moving out is that it would imply we want him to move out. When actually, we just want him to move back in.
I like his new GF too! But they never come around, and this is week 5 of the disappearing act. I also worry that hes falling really hard. Hes had problems with dependency on messed up girls in the past, and while I like Sosha, I cant say I know her well enough belay my fears. Oh well, maybe its my problem. |

[Jul. 22nd, 2009|09:19 am] |
Parties after midterms. There are about four places to go on the island if you want to go out. No. 1 is Banana's. They're right near campus, big, cater to the students, have food and are open 24/7. Its the place everyone is at every night. No. 2 is Fuzion, small, hot!, has a cover and creepy locals. No.3 is Stewart's. Stewart's is a resort restaurant during the day, but becomes a bar on Wednesday and Friday nights. Famous for their one dollar (Eastern Carribian, the local currency, about 40 cents US to the dollar) Caribs (local beer) on Wednesdays. And finally OWLS, which has hermit crab racing and fancy drink specials on Monday. ( Party! ) And that brings me to now. I'm not so sure med school is supposed to be like spring break, but what the hey, as long as I'm not going to be considered for top residencies by going here, might as well enjoy. |

So, I have a large window in my room above my bed. Its at ground level (our house is built into a hill) and looks out at a sidewalk and a fence behind which is some jungle. Every morning at around 11 AM two finches come to the sidewalk, saunter gingerly up to the window and peck at it until I arise and give them a look. They in turn give me a look as if to say, "What?... Lazy ass" and fly off in no particular hurry. |

| Smarty pants dinner and reality TV |
[Apr. 18th, 2009|01:40 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | procrastinating | ] | So, this last term (first term) I managed to get a 4.0. They have grades at St. George's, but it works like the honors/high pass/pass thing. As a lovely reward I got to join Iota Epsilon Alpha, the honors fraternity, of which I am now our class's representative. For joining this club I get to 1) pay dues 2) participate/organize lame-o fund raising events 3) fund raise. Kinda a shit deal if you ask me. The one bright spot is the we all get to have a fancy schmancy dinner with all of our professors at a swank hotel.
It was at a place called the Vermont Hotel, located the old part of the city. The banquet hall we were in overlooked the old castle keep as well as the river Tyne. When the staff took your coat, they also handed you a glass of wine. Service in England SUCKS, btw, even in fancy restaurants. This was the only time Ive been here that I would say the service was excellent. And dinner was grand, coq au vin (which I had made two days earlier, coincidentally) and an apple crumble to die for. The teachers all gave nice speeches congratulating us and telling us not to look down on our classmates. For real, they told us that. They also told us we would be inducted later because they had "misplaced" our certificates and we couldn't take the oath of entry without them. Oops. Then we had pictures where, during the "funny" one, I was the only person to do anything... everyone smiling and me flashing the horns, sticking out my tongue. Oh, I have a mohawk now, so that makes it even better. I bet that goes on the website...
Those who know my TV watching habits know that at any given time I watch, usually, a single reality TV program. Any more than that and I can't do it. I mean who has the available emotional energy to spend on Tila Tequila 4 and I Love New York 17? This semester has been an exception. There are two shows which I've been downloading through torrent which I don't think I can live without. ( Read more... ) |

| "pssst! Caroline! I found a new muscle!" *poke*poke* |
[Apr. 16th, 2009|01:47 am] |
So, I've been trying to gain weight since... well, forever. I was 98 pounds in junior year of high school, up to 108 in undergrad. Its pretty much stayed there for the last six years. Mostly because, while I love food, I have a tiny stomach capacity and I hate the gym. Recently that has changed.
Medical school has made me more hungry than I ever thought possible. I'd usually just eat whenever I had a free moment, I just didn't get all that hungry. If I was out, or had something to do and didn't have time to eat, I just chugged a glass of cold water or coffee and that was it for two hours. I'd be an excellent anorexic. On top of that, when I get stressed I stop eating. I think I once went for 36 hours before I even noticed. Thank you masters paper. There really is nothing like studying 10+ hours a day to make you ravenous. If I do get super stressed, the food drive still dies but I went from eating probably 1600 calories to well over 2000 a day.
Working out is fun! Yes, it is! I started going with a friend who showed me how to lift weights the right way so I don't sprain every tendon I own. And, I've started running, which is amazingly cathartic. You feel good for hours after. I guess everyone knew this... (Added bonus, I can feel my tensor fascia latta which is lots of fun to play with in class)
The bottom line is that with the help of protein shakes and a little discipline I'm up to 118. Now, I'm only 5' 5", and my body fat is somewhere in the realm of 7%. This combined with naturally ghostly pale skin means I can see the muscle bellies in my forearm through my skin. Particularly palmaris longus and flexor carpi radialis. Its great for parties. Medical school parties.... *cry* |

| Total eclipse of the heart |
[Apr. 11th, 2009|09:59 pm] |
So, last night. Its a bank holiday here now and we have a four day weekend. Last night was supposed to be just a relaxed night of bowling. Things went according to plan for the first part of the night. Played two games, had two pints, got a new personal best. 116. Yes, Im that good. It was a good evening, people who I like, but also people who I hadnt really met before. We were having a good time so when the place closed at midnight we decided to head to the clubs.
Long story short, me and two friends wound up at Powerhouse, the local gay mega club. And we look up on stage and Nicki French is singing! I didnt even know she was British. According to some people we met at the bar, she comes and sings there all the time. Of course she sang total eclipse of the heart, like, three times. And then she finished with a new song that just got crickets. Gay, drunk crickets. On the whole, bowling + drinking + meeting locals + Nicki French = a good night. |

Here are some gems.
“This entire class of preschool kids was out in one of their little preschool wagons, and the squirrel is looking rabid and bleeding at the mouth,” she says. “It was not what I had in mind when I started this humanitarian project.”
Who first came up with the idea of drowning, Ms. Lennig cannot recall, but it was her husband who handled the first executions. The trap, which was long and narrow, fit perfectly in the barrel.
I just cannot handle this anymore. He sees me and tries to wander off, but they can’t run very fast. I got him with the sledgehammer. He tried to dodge me, but I got him on the head.”
“They sort of follow you around,” Mr. Rattiner says. “They’re curious, like Curious George bees.” That sounds sort of sweet. No, Mr. Rattiner says.
My father-in-law had a big helping. He declared it the best woodchuck he’d ever eaten.” |

So, I had an interview today that went exceptionally well. The guy I interviewed with was a neurosurgeon. An older man, a bit shaky, I think he's retired... well, hope. Anywho, after about an hours long conversation he said he was going to try his hardest to get the committee to admit me. Yay!
Also, when I'm ready to spend the rest of my life with someone I guess I'm just old fashioned. We're both in our best suits, at the best restaurant in town. We end an exquisite meal, the light is dimmed just perfectly and, my heart racing, get down on one knee. I look into his loving eyes, and open the box I've been fidgeting with all night. "Baby, I love you and, um, heh, will you commitment ceremony me?" (video related)

| the gays... we're coming |
[Nov. 13th, 2007|03:49 pm] |
So, Ive had 3 exams in as many weeks, one yet to go. I did something reeeal dumb on Friday. I had been feeling really trashy for a few days. The way you feel when you're basically just staving off illness with stress. So, I go and invite Dennis and the Opperwalls over for a game of Star Wars brand Risk. Turns out they weren't around so Dennis and I took in a rather confusing/one sided game. Then there was nothing to do and it was 9:00. So, Dennis suggests calling Cory. She's around and Jill is in town! Hows that for a blast from the past. So, we go over, her place is awesomely cool and then decide to head to a casino for dinner (yeah, left field).
The Motor City is marketed as retro-elegant neo-decadent. I feel it was neither, and yet they had good ribs. The buffet was $31 as it was "seafood Friday". We get there, play some games then head to the bar. Those poor lady bartenders. Behind them was the DJ booth, blaring old 80's songs. One was holding up admirably, clearly confused and mentally wasted but service with a smile. The other was on her last legs. Kinda swaying and squinting like she was being electrocuted on a regular basis. She made Cory's drink without alcohol. So it became midnight after a rousing round of video poker/blackjack. And we did a secret ballet in order to decide we needed to drink more.
Cass Cafe was next, met a few of Cory's friends, very nice. There was a round of Happy Birthday where the participants surrounded the Birth-ee, sang the song then blew smoke onto her. Wonderful! There was also much talk of fags and hags. Who won? I'm not sure. Also whiskey sours and beer, yum.
Then back to Cory's after a stop at the liquor store. It was drinking game time... Stabby pirate game, crocodile dentist, uno, categories! All at once! Then catchphrase without the game, so basically passing around a dictionary flipping to a word and having people guess. Also, Mulan. I basically poured vodka gimlets until I was too gone to pour them anymore. I stayed the night at Cory's with Dennis and took off around 10, as I felt like a shower and a bed.
I was wrecked until Monday... it was real bad. Headaches, nausea, exhaustion the whole deal and an exam on that Monday. Oh well, Im doing well in my other classes... And I'm glad I got a night out. Maybe thats why I feel so awesome today.

| The viewing wall |
[Nov. 7th, 2007|05:53 pm] |
So, I think I may have forgotten to mention, Howie got a HUGE TV. 50 inch wide screen plasma. It pretty much takes up a wall. Anywho, the picture is only a little better, as we don't get HD channels and everything's a little stretched out. We do get an odd form of cable now, as the TV has a build in receiver and Comcast never turned off the cable of the last person living here. I say odd because we get about 75 channels but then there are subchannels. Which seem to be randomly strewn about and are usually just repeats of other channels. They aren't special HD channels, which would make sense, just random. Some shows are now broadcast in HD, House for instance. Its nuts, crazy nuts, I can see your pores Hugh nuts. You can even see all the makeup. The Foreman character seems to have the most... bad skin. |
